African Studies Students’ Association (ASSA), IAS, Elect New Executives

In compliance with the constitutional provision of periodic elections, African Studies Students’ Association (ASSA), elected a new set of Executive Council members on the 9th of September, 2026.

All Executive offices were contested except for the office of the Finance Minister. During the manifesto event which was held two days before the election, students, staff and members of the public observed and engaged with the presentations and promises of the contestants. Present at the official gathering of the students’ association were members of the academic staff, including the Secretary to the Institute, Mrs Dorcas Adesuyi, Dr Olaoluwa Adekola (PG SubDean), Dr Dapo Ajayi (PG Coordinator), and Dr Oreoluwa Oguntomisin.

While the office of the Executive President was contested by Ms Beatrice Ekpenyong and Ms Oyinkansola Adisa, other offices were contested unopposed. Ms Oyinkansola Adisa was elected the new President of the graduate students' association on Wednesday 9th September, 2026. Ms Adisa secured 39 votes ahead of Beatrice Ekpeyong, who polled 24 votes in the presidential race.

The unopposed candidates were also elected, with Unimashi Ugbe polling 57 votes as Vice President, Juan Oluremi polling 62 votes as Secretary of State, and Marvellous Osunlana polling 56 votes as Deputy Secretary of State. Ifefami Adeleke polled 61 votes for Information Minister, Ayomide Alabi secured 54 valid votes for Social and Welfare, while Temiloluwa Ajao polled 57 valid votes for the position of Head of Treasury.

The election was coordinated by the Independent Electoral Committee which included Tioluwase Daniel Ola-Ajao, Atiku Nimota Damilola, Owolabi Sunday Adebayo and Adedoja Favour.
