The Feast of Barracuda Comes to IAS
The 5th Nathaniel Oyelola Distinguished Lecture of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS)—also known as the Pyrates Confraternity (Jolly Rogers Deck) in collaboration with the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan is set to hold in IAS on the 22nd of July, 2026.
Among the distinguished "Original Seven" founding fathers of association in 1952 was Prof. Nathaniel (Nath) Oyelola, a remarkable intellectual and engineer who made significant academic contributions to his alma mater, notably serving as an Adjunct Professor in the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan. In celebration of his enduring legacy and the confraternity's continuous commitment to social advocacy, humanitarianism, and egalitarianism, the Jolly Rogers Deck of NAS proudly upholds the tradition of hosting an annual public lecture in his honor to address critical socio-political issues.
Continuing this legacy, the 5th Nathaniel Oyelola Distinguished Lecture is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 3:00 PM WAT at the Lady Bank Anthony Hall, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan. The event will feature a robust dissection of national security and developmental challenges by a panel of expert resource persons.
Prof. Tajudeen Ademola Akanji of the Department of Peace, Security and Humanitarian Studies will speak on "Nigeria's education under siege: The Paradox of National Development and the Prevalence of Insecurity," while Prof. Nelson Fashina from the Department of English will explore "Alternative Defense Systems: Pathways to Sustainable Security Architecture." Additionally, human rights activist and legal practitioner Comrade Rashidat Adeshina will discuss "The Challenges and Effects of Insecurity on Nigerian Womanhood." Michael Olatunbosun will moderate the event, promising an engaging and thought-provoking intellectual discourse.
