IAS, ASSA welcome 2024/25 New Students at Orientation Programme (May 27-29, 2025)

The Director of the Institute, Professor Sola Olorunyomi welcomed the new students, took them through the history of the Institute, the programmes being offered and admonished them to make the best of the human and material resources available to them.

New Masters, M.Phil/Ph.D. and Ph.D. students were welcomed to the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, during the orientation programme, powered by African Studies Students’ Association, which is the Graduate Students’ Association (ASSA). The Director of the Institute, Professor Sola Olorunyomi welcomed the new students, took them through the history of the Institute, the programmes being offered and admonished them to make the best of the human and material resources available to them. The new students were also welcomed and taken through the administrative processes in the Institute by the Secretary to the Institute, Mrs Dorcas Adesuyi, while the Institute Librarian, Mrs Adedokun, and Womens’ Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC) Librarian, Mrs Otolorin presented on library use and clearance. Other academic and non-academic members of staff in the Institute also graced the orientation and welcomed the new students.

Professor Kayode Samuel (Deputy Provost, Postgraduate College, UI) and the Postgraduate Coordinator, Institute of African Studies, UI, Dr Olaolu Adekola introduced the students to the intricacies of course registrations and participation in seminars. The Students’ Staff Adviser, Dr Sharon Omotoso, also welcomed the students while the President of the ASSA, Michael Awoyemi dwelt on the association’s membership, its ongoing projects and the benefits of participation in its activities. Also present were the sister agencies in the Institute, CBAAC Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC), and the French Institute for Research in Africa IFRA-Nigeria welcomed the students.
